I-95 Providence Viaduct

Providence, RI

One of the most traveled segments along the entire I-95 corridor, the Providence Viaduct is vital to Rhode Island and the northeast region’s economy. Crossing the Woonsquatucket River, railroad tracks, and the heart of the City of Providence, the 1,300-foot, eight-span steel girder bridge is over 100 feet wide and carries 166,000 vehicles per day. When the bridge faced immediate and significant issues, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) turned to VHB to provide a range of inspection and design tasks related to replacing or rehabilitating the bridge. From bridge inspection and replacement design to help obtaining funding, VHB has been RIDOT’s partner in driving forward this important project—all the while maintaining traffic flow to make certain that Providence stays open for business. VHB’s preliminary plans were used as the base for continuing the design, and VHB was engaged to develop the final design of the project using the traditional design-bid-build method.
