Redeveloping a large, underutilized site into a bustling multi-use center for living, shopping, and making community connections is at the heart of the Innovative Urban Village project. Led by the Gotham Organization and the Christian Cultural Center (CCC), the redevelopment provides affordable housing for more than 2,100 families, new jobs, local retail, open space, and community and cultural facilities.
The VHB team provided environmental services pursuant to City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR), including the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Environmental analyses included air and noise, zoning and public policy, land use and socioeconomics.
The air and noise analysis considered vibration issues and air quality impacts such as emissions from vehicles and HVAC systems. The community facilities analysis focused on the project’s potential to affect schools, childcare services, and libraries, and included a residential open space assessment with an urban design and shadows study. VHB also conducted a transportation study involving traffic, pedestrian, safety, and subway and bus route analyses, as well as a parking demand study.
