Determining the feasibility of implementing a noise barrier program independent of new roadway projects along New Hampshire’s most heavily traveled roadways required a comprehensive evaluation to understand existing noise impacts and establish where new barriers would be most effective. VHB collaborated with the NHDOT to develop the Type II Noise Policy and create an analysis framework for determining potential noise barrier locations throughout the state. The project also determined feasibility, costs, and what municipalities would benefit from the new policy.
The evaluation included 286 potential study locations along major highways with dense residential areas, allowing the NHDOT to prioritize target municipalities that would benefit the most from the Type II barrier program and to develop local noise-compatible land use planning restrictions. The noise barrier feasibility and reasonableness analysis were provided in a readily accessible geospatial format, allowing the NHDOT to easily access and review information for specific locations.
