The Town of Hillsborough, North Carolina, developed a Town-wide Comprehensive Sustainability Plan, completed in January 2022. The effort included an inclusive public engagement process, analysis and evaluation of existing plans, development of goals and objectives, prioritization criteria, and creation of benchmarking and tracking systems for the plan elements. The purpose of the plan is to guide the future development of the Town as they transition to 100 percent clean energy and includes the community’s vision and goals for a sustainable future that balances environmental stewardship, resiliency, racial justice, and smart growth.
VHB worked closely with the Town to develop the plan with community input that identified current issues, opportunities, and specific recommendations for the Town as they approach the future. The public engagement process included a guided tour of the Town’s key assets with stakeholders, a two-day visioning session with members of the community, and virtual workshops to engage residents in a lively discussion on the future of Hillsborough. VHB was also instrumental in helping the Town with branding, web design for project communication, and data analysis to support the future recommendations.
