College of William & Mary Memorial to the Enslaved

Williamsburg, VA

Hearth: Memorial to the Enslaved at the College of William & Mary is an outdoor monument established to commemorate the individuals whose labor and lives built, maintained, and served the institution. The focal point of the design by architecture firm Baskervill includes a hearth structural element that evokes a brick fireplace centered within an open plaza. The interior of the hearth includes a symbolic vessel to hold fire created by local artist Will Sendor. Design included a small amphitheater-like earthen mound with inset seat walls enclosed by a canopy of mature trees. Working in partnership with Baskervill, our team supported the layout design and detailing of the landscape and hardscape elements, stormwater management, and tree preservation measures during construction.
