Last week, several VHB thought leaders presented at the Maine Stormwater Conference in Portland, ME. Hosted by the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District, this biennial event brings together the region’s technology companies, planners, infrastructure designers, builders, engineers, and state and municipal leaders to discuss innovative approaches to stormwater management. This year’s conference theme was “Adapting for the Coming Storms.”

Six VHB team members presented at the conference, sharing insights on collaborative and forward-thinking stormwater management solutions.

Theresa McGovern, Director of Water Resources, teamed up with a representative from the University of New Hampshire Stormwater Center to give an introduction on the New England Stormwater Retrofit Manual, which provides guidance on how to approach the management of stormwater through installation of Stormwater Control Measures (SCMs).

In “Acadia Great Meadow Restoration: Planning, Collaboration, and Design,” Senior Water Resources Engineer David Cloutier collaborated with the conservation organization Friends of Acadia to discuss VHB’s comprehensive two-dimensional hydraulic model of the Great Meadow wetland, which informed the Park’s watershed-level wetland restoration project.

Zelda Dively, Civil Designer, and Peter Smiar, Director of Land Development, Vermont, gave insights on how the overhaul of the Sugarloaf ski resort overcame environmental and design challenges and how the project offers invaluable insights into efficient water resource management.

Water Resource Team Leader Eric Monkiewicz led the presentation “Flood Resiliency for Route 9 in Framingham,” which detailed the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT) flood resiliency project for Route 9, which involved designing two stormwater infiltration basins.

Partnering with a Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) representative, Water Resources Specialist Garrison Beck gave an update on current MaineDOT projects, including the updated Transportation Best Management Practices (BMP) Manual, national 6PPD-quinone research, and their Smart Chloride project.
