The American Planning Association (APA) Virginia Chapter honors the best in planning throughout the Commonwealth with its Annual Awards Program. VHB was honored to receive APA Virginia’s Commonwealth Connectors Award for the Friendly City Trail at the 2024 conference in July. The Commonwealth Connectors award highlights projects that incorporate creative concepts to solve challenges and meet diverse, modern transportation needs. VHB was recognized for innovative and exceptional transportation-focused planning.

VHB partnered with the City of Harrisonburg on planning and design services for the two-mile, 10-foot-wide, shared-use path that connects schools, parks, and neighborhoods on the city’s west side. The constructed improvements align with the city’s objectives to enhance multimodal transportation options and improve safety for Harrisonburg’s bicycle and pedestrian network.

VHB was honored for exemplifying a holistic approach to urban development, prioritizing community engagement, thoughtful design, and sustainable features. As the Friendly City Trail continues to evolve and thrive, it stands as a testament to the power of a successful community driven initiative that will enhance the quality of life for residents, students, and visitors for years to come.

In addition to receiving the Commonwealth Connectors Award at the conference, VHB also presented, “Rising Tides, Resilient Minds: Protecting America’s Birthplace,” a 60-minute lecture discussing our resiliency work at Historic Jamestown. During the session, attendees learned about the long-term approach to resiliency planning that provides a promising future for Jamestown’s historic coastal site. VHB discussed the techniques and resources for implementing mitigation strategies that engage community members, support economic opportunity, and enhance quality of life.
