One of Richmond’s newest additions to downtown, the General Assembly Building (GAB), won the 2023 Impact Award from Richmond Real Estate Group (RREG). Each year, RREG selects a commercial real estate project for the Impact Award that has had a significant, positive impact on the Richmond community. The design team comprised of Glavé and Holmes, Robert A.M. Stern, Gilbane, and VHB were recognized and celebrated at the organization’s April meeting.

Officially open in October 2023, the new 15-story, 450,000-square-foot GAB stands as a testament to innovation and preservation. Constructed on the historic footprint of the original building, which dates to 1912, the GAB retains the façade of its original structure, seamlessly blending tradition with modern functionality. VHB landscape architects and engineers enhanced the site’s connectivity for users and visitors to the adjacent parking deck and Capitol Square grounds, while also helping the team overcome site challenges, including drainage and underground utilities.

"We are immensely proud to have played a part in creating a space that fosters collaboration, celebrates our heritage, and leaves a lasting legacy for generations to come," said John Carty, PE, Project Manager. “By integrating historic preservation and modern innovation, the GAB is a beacon of connectivity, bridging the past with the future. Its architectural significance not only enhances our skyline but also enriches the cultural fabric of Richmond.”
