Dale Burton, PE, PLS, joins VHB as Transportation Geomatics Director in Raleigh, North Carolina. Dale has more than three decades of experience with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) tackling complex project management challenges—particularly in route engineering and surveying. His specialized experience and insight into NCDOT and Department of Transportation (DOT) processes, standards, and specifications will help clients deliver the survey data needed to make their projects a success.
Dale served as the NCDOT State Location & Surveys (L&S) Engineer, where he led a team of close to 200 professionals across the state. Dale managed all surveying, technical, and administrative staff, as well as private engineering and surveying firms involved in NCDOT projects. He played a pivotal role in overseeing surveying, laser scanning, UAS/drones, photogrammetry, Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), and right-of-way mapping activities. Towards the end of his tenure with NCDOT, Dale played a pivotal role in two major initiatives for the agency. This included establishing the survey and mapping process for litigation of NCDOT’s Map Act/Corridor Mapping lawsuit, and setting up project control and base mapping efforts for the North Carolina portion of the Raleigh to Richmond (R2R) passenger rail project.
At VHB, Dale will work alongside Mid-Atlantic Geomatics Director, Frank Mundy, PLS focusing on developing, deploying, managing, and scaling our geomatics services within the transportation market, particularly in North Carolina and the Mid-Atlantic region.
“While Dale’s main priority will be collaborating with NCDOT and other North Carolina transportation entities, his wealth of experience will be invaluable to transportation projects and initiatives across our broader regional and corporate footprint,” said Frank.
