The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) recognized VHB’s Md Shakir Mahmud, Ph.D., and Advisor Timothy J. Gates from Michigan State University for their exceptional research paper, which was selected for the Daniel B. Fambro Student Paper Award. Titled, “A Comprehensive Evaluation of Dynamic Speed Feedback Signs on Freeway Interchange Ramps,” the paper delves into the challenges faced by freeway interchange ramps, which often experience a high crash rate due to speeding while drivers transition from a high-speed freeway to a lower speed ramp.
Shakir’s study focuses on assessing the efficacy of dynamic speed feedback signs (DSFS), a LiDAR speed detection technology, that has not been conventionally utilized on exit freeway ramps. The paper meticulously examines field evaluations conducted at three test sites, data collection methods, analysis techniques, noteworthy findings, and compelling results. Shakir concluded the paper by offering valuable recommendations to address the identified issues effectively.
