VHB Celebrates Triple Recognition at ACEC/MW Engineering Excellence Awards

Washington, DC

December 18, 2024

At the American Council of Engineering Companies of Metropolitan Washington (ACEC/MW) Engineering Excellence Awards Gala on December 17, VHB received awards for three projects: Transform I-66, the DC Smart Street Lighting Project, and the Verizon Occoquan Green Gabion/Emergency Streambank Restoration. These awards recognize outstanding engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of skill and ingenuity.

VHBers include: Ryan McAlister, Tim Smith, Pete Clary, Ahmed Amer, Lee Farmer, Jim Long, and Joe Wanat.

The Transform I-66 project was recognized with an Honor Engineering Excellence Award. This infrastructure initiative improved traffic flow and safety along the I-66 corridor by incorporating dynamically tolled Express Lanes. VHB’s innovative approach included Electronic Toll Collection and Intelligent Transportation Systems to enhance the vehicle commuting experience.

The DC Smart Street Lighting project earned an Honor Engineering Excellence Award. By converting more than 75,000 streetlights to smart, more efficient LED technology, VHB helped our nation’s capital reduce energy consumption by more than 70 percent, eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, lower maintenance costs, and improve public safety through reduced response times to outages and uniform lighting patterns.

The Verizon Occoquan Green Gabion/Emergency Streambank Restoration project received a Merit Engineering Excellence Award. VHB’s use of a sustainable green gabion retaining wall addressed urgent erosion issues along the Occoquan River. By developing an engineering solution that included plantings interwoven with stone aggregate in a wire basket, vital infrastructure and natural habits were protected.

“These awards highlight the diverse capabilities of our team and our commitment to delivering impactful engineering solutions that enhance communities and the environment,” said Joe Wanat, Metro DC Managing Director. “Each project embodies VHB's ability to solve complex challenges through innovation."
