VHB, Microsoft, and Esri recently co-hosted a live webinar on integrating advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) to provide innovative data management solutions for municipalities and organizations. Steve Anderson of VHB, Tony Franklin from Microsoft, and Ismael Chivite of Esri led the discussion, highlighting the potential of their strategic partnership to enhance decision-making, optimize project outcomes, and drive positive impacts.

Tony shared Microsoft’s progress in AI, particularly by using Microsoft’s CoPilot and CoPilot Studio. He explained how these advancements have revolutionized tasks like data analysis and decision-making, boosting efficiency and productivity within their operations.

“Our mission is to empower every person in our organization on the planet to achieve more, and so that really translates into our approach to AI,” said Tony. He illustrated this via the integration of a chatbot within the Objective Reasoning Design (ORD) system to assist engineers with common design inquiries, demonstrating AI's role in streamlining processes. Tony also emphasized Microsoft’s ethical commitment to privacy, safety, inclusiveness, and accountability to build trust in AI technologies.

Ismael discussed AI’s integration with GeoAI, starting with machine learning tools in ArcMap in 2008. He highlighted advancements such as predictive analysis and spatial clustering that have significantly enhanced GIS capabilities.

“We feel this is a very exciting space where we can make GIS information products much more approachable for people, so people can use natural language to really interrogate GIS,” Ismael explained.

Although generative AI functionalities are still in testing, Esri is now releasing several beta components to simplify user interactions and enhance analytical capabilities.

Steve concluded the webinar by discussing VHB’s AI journey, which began with the formation of a data analytics team in 2013. He emphasized the importance of robust, structured data in successful AI projects and showcased the development of ChatVHB, a proprietary generative AI solution for VHB employees. Additionally, VHB employs around 300 Microsoft Copilot licenses to improve job efficiency across various roles, underscoring VHB’s commitment to optimizing workflows and maximizing productivity with AI.

“The integration of advanced AI with GIS is not just about technological innovation; it’s about transforming how we manage and utilize data to make smarter, more informed decisions,” said Steve. “At VHB, we see AI as a pivotal tool in optimizing project outcomes and driving meaningful impact in our communities.”
