The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) modernization project is set to significantly upgrade the existing signal systems on several of the MTA's essential lines. VHB has been selected to support Siemens Mobility on this initiative, promising a transformative impact on New York City’s transportation infrastructure.

The MTA’s CBTC program—a cornerstone of the MTA’s Capital Plan—will enhance the reliability of New York City’s subway network, ultimately delivering faster, more frequent, smoother, and more reliable service for millions of daily riders. By transitioning from legacy signaling systems to communications-based control, the MTA will be able to operate trains more closely together, allowing them to run more frequently which will improve service for riders with reduced wait times and less crowded trains.

VHB has been enlisted to support Siemens in completing the design of the Data Communication System (DCS) critical network across multiple projects, including the Queens Boulevard Line West, Culver Line, and 8th Avenue lines. These lines are vital to the city’s subway infrastructure, and the introduction of CBTC will significantly enhance operational performance.

"This collaboration highlights our commitment to advancing transportation infrastructure while providing safe and secure transit systems," said Hadi Meshgi, Transit Comms/Systems Engineering Lead at VHB. "The integration of CBTC technology will not only improve operational efficiency but also deliver lasting benefits to millions of riders daily. We are proud to contribute to this transformative project and look forward to supporting the MTA’s visionary goals."

As the MTA continues investing in modernizing its infrastructure, VHB is excited to contribute our technical skills and knowledge to help shape the future of New York City’s transit system.
