Danbury Transit-Oriented Development Plan

Danbury, CT

To support transit-oriented development (TOD), address current and future bus operator needs, and create synergies between bus and rail systems, the City of Danbury engaged VHB to conduct a planning study for co-locating the city’s local and intercity bus services at a new facility adjacent to the Metro-North Railroad’s Danbury station.

VHB examined potential sites and their impacts on traffic and bus routes and operations to identify a preferred site for the facility. We prepared a concept plan for the relocated bus hub, along with order-of-magnitude cost estimates for the facility. This conceptual layout for the new hub incorporated multimodal amenities such as waiting rooms, bus shelters, a pedestrian bridge for Metro-North access, pick-up and drop-off areas, and taxi stands.

This work set the stage for Danbury to pursue and successfully receive federal funding to advance the design for the co-located bus hub. The new facility will help position Danbury as an attractive place to live, especially for people looking to move out of New York City.
