Located on the Roanoke Sound in Nags Head, the Soundside Event Site is a 15-acre park primarily designed as a venue for art shows, festivals, and the Outer Banks Seafood Festival. Additionally, it provides lawn areas for passive recreation, kite flying, and access to the Roanoke Sound for non-motorized watersports during non-event days. VHB provided master planning, design, and public involvement services to help the Dare County Tourism Board improve the site. Project goals included enhancing existing site uses, creating opportunities for year-round usage, and allowing flexible implementation over time.
VHB worked closely with the project Steering Committee, facilitated public meetings, and developed a master plan that includes improved multimodal access to the site, multiple event lawns, a central pavilion, parking, low impact stormwater management features, public restrooms, pedestrian walkways, and a waterfront boardwalk. Following the adoption of the master plan, VHB developed the overall schematic plans, and the Phase I and II construction plans for the park. Phases I and II have been constructed and the site is open to the public.
