Hopewell Valley Golf & Country Club

Hopewell, NJ

The historic Moore’s Mill Complex, established in 1720, has evolved over the centuries, but has faced a series of challenges in recent years. Formerly a private golf course and country club since the 1930s, the renamed Hopewell Valley Golf & Country Club provides enhanced recreational opportunities for the public. In 2020, Mercer County purchased the 186-acre site, aiming to integrate it with the historic Moore’s Mill structure which remains today and tackle the ongoing drinking water and operational challenges. The County has partnered with VHB to embark on a comprehensive remediation and redevelopment journey that supports the vision of a sustainable future for the property.

Social—Implementing sustainability at Hopewell Valley Golf & Country Club has benefitted public health and safety, resolving past drinking water violations. The County’s remedial actions, including installing modern water treatment systems, significantly improved water quality and restored public confidence. Transforming Hopewell Valley Golf & Country Club into a public recreational area has strengthened community ties. This initiative preserves the historical essence of the location and serves as a model for other communities facing similar sustainability challenges.

Environmental—Since 2020, the property, previously plagued by issues such as 4,4-DDT contamination and failing septic systems, has undergone significant improvements. VHB has collaborated with the County since 2021 to reinstate the public water system approvals, evaluating 20 areas of concern and monitoring the drinking water and testing potable wells under the Private Well Testing Act (PWTA). Decommissioning old wells, installing a new potable well, upgrading drinking water treatment systems, and replacing the failing septic system have reduced environmental risks. By adopting environmentally safe products and optimizing irrigation, the complex has set a new standard for sustainable operations. The proactive measures, such as developing and implementing a Groundwater Under the Direct Influence of Surface Water (GUDI) workplan, to assess the aquifer quality and potential for cross-contamination from Stoney Brook underscore its dedication to protecting local water resources.

Economic—The economic improvements at the Hopewell Golf & Country Club, guided by VHB, represent a valuable investment in the site’s future. Addressing drinking water violations and upgrading essential infrastructure will promote long-term financial savings. New, efficient systems lower maintenance costs, providing economic benefits. With new accessible recreational options, the Hopewell Valley Golf & Country Club encourages community participation and stimulates local businesses.
