The longstanding partnership between VHB and Mercer County in New Jersey has resulted in significant progress in sustainability, facilitated by multiple on-call contracts with various County departments. Of note is our collaboration with the County Planning Department, whose commitment to conservation over the past 30 years has resulted in the preservation of approximately 40,000 acres of land, providing access to natural resources for the County’s 380,000 residents and future generations.
Social—The collaboration between Mercer County and VHB has significantly enhanced social infrastructure, particularly in recreational facilities. VHB's involvement in parks, historic sites, airports, golf courses, and sports stadiums has vastly expanded access to high-quality recreational spaces for residents. These improvements foster community well-being and have contributed to lower medical costs associated with sedentary lifestyles. By enhancing recreational infrastructure, the partnership promotes social sustainability through healthier living conditions and a higher quality of life.
Environmental—The environmental benefits of this partnership reflect Mercer County's dedication to sustainable practices. Initially focusing on identifying, remediating, and closing contaminated sites under the New Jersey Site Remediation Reform Act (SRRA), the scope has since broadened to include open space acquisitions, drinking water management and testing, and air permit renewals. These initiatives have led to significant environmental benefits like water supply replenishment, improved water quality, flood mitigation, and the creation of wildlife habitats. Through these efforts, VHB and Mercer County are safeguarding natural resources and promoting ecological balance, offering a healthier environment for future generations.
Economic—The preservation and enhancement of open spaces have not only increased property values in adjacent areas, benefiting local homeowners, but also generated jobs through the maintenance and upkeep of these spaces. The economic growth observed from this collaboration underscores the importance of integrating environmental sustainability with economic development, leading to long-term financial benefits for the county.
