Mercer County and VHB are partnering to transform the former Moore’s Station Quarry into a premier regional park that revitalizes the area as a multi-use recreation hub, integrating recreational activities with ecological restoration to address community needs and enhance the site’s sustainability.
Social—The proposed redevelopment will offer diverse activities for visitors of all ages and abilities. New attractions may include walking and biking trails, BMX tracks, rope courses, zip lines, camping, water recreation activities, native plant display gardens, ponds, and scenic overlooks. These amenities will foster a stronger sense of community and inclusivity, allowing all visitors to enjoy the outdoors.
Environmental—VHB performed key environmental tasks for the redevelopment, including investigating historic locations of Aboveground Storage Tanks (ASTs) and Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) and assessing soil quality after tank removals. Specific areas of concern, such as potential historic USTs and transformer impact areas, were studied to support comprehensive soil quality assessment and remediation. These efforts will transform the quarry into a living laboratory for restoration science, boosting biodiversity and improving air and soil quality.
Economic—A few key economic features of the project include water-centric sports centers and extreme sports facilities, offering team building and youth program opportunities to attract a broad range of visitors. Additionally, the site’s restoration as a pleasure garden and ecological restoration venue will create collaboration opportunities with non-profit organizations and volunteer groups, enhancing its economic viability and long-term financial benefits.
