Transportation Video Analytics System

Osceola County, FL

Osceola County envisions a congestion- and fatality-free transportation system that improves the mobility of people and goods, enhances economic prosperity, and preserves the quality of the environment and communities throughout the County. VHB is part of an international project team selected by the Board of County Commissioners to utilize video analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to drastically improve intersection safety on Florida’s roadways.

As part of the busy Central Florida amusement park tourist corridor, Osceola County is an ideal location to pilot this potentially life-saving technology. Funded by a $500,000 Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Local Agency Program (LAP) grant that supports technology deployment to enhance mobility and safety on the state’s highest-fatality roadways, the program provides the County and FDOT with the critical information needed to be proactive about safety.

VHB partnered with Derq, a provider of AI analytics solutions for connected roads and vehicles, to develop a data-informed approach to safety management that provides real-time transportation data to improve safety and operations. Using Derq’s state-of-the-art, proprietary video analytics system, the team captures and analyzes video data from traffic cameras installed at major intersections, enabling them to monitor and understand the movement and interactions of motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, and help identify near-miss incidents and contributing crash factors. The data is then used to prioritize and implement proactive strategies to prevent or mitigate crashes.

VHB is advancing how data-informed metrics can be leveraged to guide the alignment of the County’s identified priorities with its vision of upgrading infrastructure and transportation networks, enhancing neighborhoods, and growing and diversifying the County’s economy while supporting cost-effective and life-saving investment decisions.
