Washington Bridge North Phase 2 Reconstruction

Providence & East Providence, RI

Carrying approximately 96,000 vehicles each day, Washington Bridge is one of the busiest sections of I-195 in Rhode Island. VHB is the lead designer for this $78M bridge reconstruction design-build project that will address critical structural deficiencies and relieve chronic traffic congestion while also introducing a new off-ramp that will provide direct access to riverfront land. VHB is leading the bridge and roadway design, traffic management, and environmental compliance and permitting efforts for this project. Design highlights and innovations include a bridge span design that reduces infrastructure and eliminates in-water construction; a ramp design that improves traffic operations and bicycle/pedestrian safety and eliminates the need for utility relocations; and a streamlined staging and traffic management approach that will significantly minimize traffic impacts during construction.
