Ruggles Station Expansion

Boston, MA

Providing transfers between the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Orange Line; Providence/Stoughton, Needham, and Franklin/Foxboro Commuter Rail Lines; MBTA bus routes; and private area shuttle services, Ruggles Station is a key urban intermodal facility with extensive pedestrian traffic in and around the station area. The MBTA turned to VHB to help deliver the design and construction of an upgraded station with a new platform and accessibility improvements that will support area development and growth opportunities, while creating better and more convenient transit connections for the public.

VHB provided overall project management for the station’s expansion. The project included track, signal, communication, and power engineering; platform, station access and infrastructure planning and engineering; urban and transportation planning and design; parking and circulation design; environmental services; stakeholder and interagency coordination; and community outreach.

Ruggles Station now provides commuters with shorter travel times, a consistent schedule with more convenient transfers, and improved accessibility to Northeastern University and the surrounding neighborhoods.
