Burlington Greenway Rehabilitation

Burlington, VT

The Burlington Greenway/Bike Path, located along the City of Burlington’s waterfront, offers exceptional views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains while promoting alternative transportation, providing recreation, and encouraging active lifestyles. This popular 7.5-mile walking/bicycling pathway, nicknamed the “Crown Jewel of the Queen City,” runs through the heart of the city, an area that hosts multiple events each week during the summer, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors a year and boosting the local economy.

As one of the busiest multi-use paths in the state, the Greenway began to show significant deterioration in terms of overall conditions and functionality and was due for a comprehensive rehabilitation. VHB developed conceptual plans for the entire path and provided design services to enhance connectivity and improve the overall safety of the Greenway, including enhancements such as:

  • Path widening to 11 feet with two-foot aggregate shoulders.
  • Realigning the path through Waterfront Park to increase green space and accommodate events.
  • Installing drivable grass pavers to further extend green space while providing event staging areas.
  • Extensive surface painting to delineate path and roadway surfaces.
  • Comprehensive signing and striping.
  • Landscaping enhancements at roadway crossings.
  • Numerous stormwater treatment facilities.
  • Addition of “pause places” for rest and waterfront viewing.

Through close city-wide coordination, comprehensive public outreach, and innovative design solutions, the rehabilitation of the Greenway was completed on schedule and opened to the public with widespread praise.
