Dillsboro Bridge Replacement Project

Dillsboro, NC

The Dillsboro Bridge Replacement project, known as Haywood Bridge Road, is located in the small, tourism driven town of Dillsboro, NC, crossing Scott Creek and the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Adjacent to the Monteith Farmstead Community Park and nearby historic properties, the bridge required a complete replacement due to sever deficiencies. As the prime consultant, VHB executed NEPA compliance, public outreach, and final design.

Mountainous terrain and skewed geometry presented challenges in delivering a constructable solution for replacing this severely deficient bridge structure. The design included a large retaining wall and was aesthetically consistent with its surrounding quaint atmosphere. Mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists was also a priority for the project, incorporating sidewalks, including connectivity to Monteith Park; crosswalks; pedestrian signals; and lighting across the bridge into the downtown.
