The Suffolk County Department of Public Works (SCDPW) is enhancing road safety through the Strategic Highway Safety Action Plan (SHSAP). Covering approximately 430 miles of county roads, the plan prioritizes the safety of all road users—motorists, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. This initiative aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the county's roads, striving for zero traffic-related deaths.
To support these goals, VHB conducted an in-depth review of past crash data and performed comprehensive screenings using the New York State Department of Transportation’s (NYSDOT) safety system, CLEAR. By employing both crash-based network screening and risk-based systemic network screening, the team can identify high-risk areas and implement effective safety strategies and countermeasures. Additionally, VHB is enhancing SCDPW’s workflow by integrating CLEAR and other technologies and aligning the processes with New York State Safety guidance.
Another key component of this initiative is the development of a web-based platform that consolidates crash data and screening results into an interactive dashboard. This tool offers a comprehensive view of safety information and integrates datasets like the County’s planned Capital Projects. By providing decision-makers with critical insights, the platform streamlines implementation, confirming safety improvements are executed where they’re needed most.
The SHSAP marks a critical shift in how Suffolk County approaches road safety. By leveraging comprehensive analysis and innovative tools, this project sets a new standard for road safety planning, envisioning a future with fewer accidents and healthier, safer communities.
