Dexter Southfield School

VHB has built a strong working relationship with Dexter Southfield School, delivering an array of integrated services across multiple projects. From analyzing bus parking capacities to designing campus improvements, we have provided innovative solutions to enhance the school’s physical elements so that students, faculty, and staff can focus on learning.

When the school had a water pressure and supply issue, it turned to VHB for help. Under a tight deadline to align with the opening of a new lower school building, VHB helped with the design and permitting of a water booster station to meet campus fire pressure requirements. Additionally, we contributed design and construction phase services for stormwater system improvements and utility support for the Clay Center dining hall expansion, which involved constructing a new building over an existing buried basement. When this project was nearing completion, the school decided to add a second floor, creating a vertical expansion, which VHB also supported by providing drainage design services.

Our team also completed a campus-wide parking, accessibility, and traffic circulation assessment to alleviate the heavy bus traffic in the school’s back parking lot. A fast-tracked summer project to avoid interrupting the school year, this initiative created enough room for all buses to stack with space for cars to drive around the lot. We also collaborated with LLB Architects to produce a campus masterplan for landscape and infrastructure assessment, and supported utility and stormwater design, permitting, and construction of the lower school’s new athletic fieldhouse.
