Boston, MA

July 12, 2024

VHB thought leaders presented at the Fourth Transportation Research Board (TRB) International Conference on Access Management from June 24-26 in Boston. This event spotlighted practitioner-ready techniques and academic work on the interaction between transportation and land use.

Six VHB and MassDOT team members sit on a panel at the TRB Access Management conference. The title of their presentation is: Bridging Regional Needs with Local Access: Route 128/I-95 Land Use and Transportation Study.
Rob Nagi (VHB), Keir Evans (Boston Properties), Niki Hastings (VHB), Michael Clark (Stantec), Heyne Kim (Boston Transportation Department), Leslie Karr (Overland Park, Kansas)

The theme for this year’s meeting was Access Management: Safety and Design from the Curb to the Interchange for All Users. VHB team members presented six sessions with topics that spanned across the conference’s three major focus areas: design, improving safety through access management, and land use, transportation planning, and legal issues. VHB partnered with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to collaborate on several sessions.

  • Lourenço Dantas, Project Manager, Transportation Planning and Operations, presented on a panel in the session “Methods for Evaluating Transit Impacts and Developer Mitigation Strategies,” which facilitated a discussion of transportation mitigation policies and practices in the United States and Canada.
  • Lourenço led a second session with Senior Transportation Planner Michael Gordon that focused on a MassDOT study that aimed to develop a methodology for estimating land use impacts on transit services.
  • In a panel presentation moderated by Liz Williams from MassDOT, Nicolette Hastings, New England Service Leader, and Rob Nagi, Director, Transportation Planning and Operations delivered their session “Bridging Regional Needs with Local Access: Route 128/I-95 Land Use & Transportation Study.” This project for MassDOT focused on transportation issues on the congested roadway corridor between Newton and Lexington.
  • Ronald Hartman, Senior Project Manager, co-presented on the innovative wrong-way vehicle detection (WWVD) system. Carrie McInerney, Director, Transportation Systems, also collaborated on this project.
  • In their presentation “Safety & Multimodal Mobility Considerations for a New Elementary School,” Senior Project Manager Vinod Kalikiri and Project Manager Michael Santos gave an overview of VHB’s robust transportation study of Hayden Rowe Street in Hopkinton.
  • Senior Transportation Engineer Angela Dempsey and Senior Intelligent Transportation Systems Network Specialist Matthew Picanso presented “Improving Traffic Light Efficiency with Technology," which described how MassDOT engaged VHB to design the Worcester to Wellesley, Massachusetts Route 9 Connected Corridor.

We are proud of everyone on the team who presented at the conference as thought leaders in safety, design, and the interaction between land use and transportation,” said Nicolette Hastings. “We remain committed to partnering with our clients to develop innovative and sustainable engineering solutions to enhance communities.”
