The Village of Bellport is advancing a transformative project at the Bellport Village Marina to strengthen coastal resiliency and improve harbor safety. VHB is leading the marine evaluation and analysis, marina design, and implementation phases of the project, conducting comprehensive data collection, field observations, and hydrographic surveys to inform design concepts.
Through a collaboration with the Waterfront Management Commission and residents, VHB worked to refine solutions that would address wave protection needs, while aligning with community priorities and meeting budget requirements. To mitigate the impact of rough waters and prevent storm damage, the Village is implementing wave attenuation measures, including the installation of a wave screen—a vertical, partially submerged structure that will dissipate wave energy and reduce the risk of damage to vessels and marina structures. Residents played a key role in selecting the wave screen as the preferred solution, marking the first plan in more than 20 years to receive approval from the Commission, Village Board of Trustees, and the community. Additional improvements include enhanced docking facilities, safer berthing areas, and renovated marina infrastructure to extend the life of the marina basin and to better withstand harsh weather conditions.
The next phase of the project will focus on securing permits, conducting environmental reviews, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review and documentation, and design. With the support of a $2.8 million Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant, VHB will assist the Village of Bellport in meeting all requirements and deadlines. This project will enhance Bellport Village Marina’s resilience and long-term sustainability, benefiting both the community and the coastal environment.
